Augmented Reality Coming to the US Army

The United States Army is always on the forefront of innovation to support its mission at home and abroad. To further that, a new device to support soldiers in the field coming in 2021: The Integrated Visual Augmentation System (IVAS).


IVAS is a special set of googles that uses augmented reality to see visual representations soldiers’ field-of-view. Using Microsoft HoloLens as a foundation, the IVAS goggles can also support 3D map overlays, recordings, directional tools, and visual markers. Furthermore, IVAS has been incorporated with night vision and thermal sights to further support individuals in the field.


Future updates to the augmentation software include Rapid Target Acquisition, facial recognition, and translation functionality to an already robust set of capabilities. These googles are set to become an important part of the Army’s toolkit.
